What’s the Role of the Artist in the Art Market?
How does the artistic practice affect the value of the artwork and artist? What is the role of the artist, both historically and contemporary, in relation to the art market?
If you’re in Los Angeles on January 30-31st, you may want to drop in on an art law conference at the Line Hotel. I’ve organized a panel on the role of the artist in the art market, particularly looking at how the artist has shifted from making art to being an artist; to creating a trademark and brand. Is this similar to certain musicians going from making music to being rock stars?
I’ve gathered four artists, art historians, theorists, curators, and writers to discuss this topic. The four panelists are:
Alexander Dumbadze
Martha Kirszenbaum
Tom Lawson
Pae White
The conference is being organized by Sotheby’s Institute of Art, in collaboration with Claremont Graduate University, the Getty Leadership Institute, and California Lawyers for the Arts.
