Pro-Clinton PAC Doesn’t Like “I’m Ready for Oligarchy” Parody
Minnesota-based activist Dan McCall has managed to irritate a pro-Hillary-for-2016 PAC.
The PAC, Ready for Hillary, alleged that McCall’s political critiques of Hillary Clinton, using the PAC’s “I’m Ready for Hillary” logo and phrase, infringed the PAC’s IP rights. The PAC also demanded that McCall stop making and selling his parody items on Zazzle.com and Cafepress.com.
But, no court hearing needed. The PAC opted to withdraw its demands, probably after consulting with an IP and First Amendment attorney.
“This is similar to cases we have seen in the past,” said Paul Alan Levy, attorney at Public Citizen. “Parodied merchandise, as the one in this case, does not violate any laws. The Ready for Hillary PAC needs to recognize Dan McCall’s First Amendment rights and rescind its issued notices.”
