Duchamp Estate Uses Copyright Law to Checkmate 3D Artists

In September 2014, Kildall and Cera received a legal threat from the Estate of Marcel Duchamp, telling them to remove the files from Thingiverse, remove the blog post discussing them, and make an offer of restitution for damages. The threat seemed to be very real; they were quite possibly breaking French law.

And yet another poignant example of how social media and the internet make the appropriation of copyrighted content “hiding” practically impossible to hide. It’s also a very good example of the control–and at times, over control–of an artist’s work by the estate or foundation. Chess, anyone?
