Should Banksy’s Graffiti Be Protected By Law?

Some Bristol University academics seem to think so. But is popular culture and financial worth enough to separate a Banksy from a run-of-the-mill mural by Joe the mechanic? Why should Banksy’s graffiti, if painted on private or public property without permission, be given legal protection over other graffiti? Is this a community standard, a legal standard, or an art historical standard, not to mention an auction standard? Too many questions.
