Clancco Takes Art & Law to South America

Flags_south_americaI’m very happy to announce that I have been invited by the Fundación Cisneros to participate in a two-day conference in Caracas, Venezuela, Promises of the Commons. My seminar, Contemporary Art and Intellectual Property: Appropriation and Copyright Law, will also be presented in conjunction with the third edition of the Seminario Fundación Cisneros at Universidad Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires, Universidad de los Andes in Colombia, and the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros in Caracas. The seminars will begin with the philosophico-legal foundations of property and the “commons,” and then shift to the history of appropriation art, bringing these concept-metaphors to a crisis with the mode of property ownership otherwise known as copyright. I would like to thank Sofia Hernández Chong Cuy and Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro for the very kind invitation. This seminar is organized by the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC). Here’s a link to a cool video on the symposium.

Here’s the seminar abstract:

How do artists deal with the inevitable fact that we are — regardless of our desire to resist — complicit in the economic production and replication of both property and intellectual property formation, transactions, and ownership? Can artists simultaneously participate in this “social network” and yet create a space where both tangible and intangible property, and by designation, private and public property, have a function other than that of preserving and perpetuating the exploitation of goods and the creation of vapid culture?
