US Post Office Ordered to Pay Artist for Copyright Infringement

It’s been over a year since we last heard anything about the Gaylord v. U.S. lawsuits, a copyright infringement case concerning the unauthorized use of a sculpture in image format by the U.S. government.

Last Friday, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims awarded sculptor Frank Gaylord nearly $685,000 in damages. According to the USA Today, the largest settlement the Postal Service previously paid for any image on a stamp was $5,000.

For those that don’t remember, the Gaylord case involved the printing of stamps with an image of the soldiers Frank Gaylord, an artist of Barre, Vt., sculpted for the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
