Artist Talk: When Cancellations Become Form

Are cancellations, censorship, and institutional quagmires necessarily the end of art projects?

Please join me and curator Lauren van Haaften-Schick for a conversation on moral rights, law as medium, and judges as art critics. Recent controversial art cases such as Mass MoCA v. Büchel, Kelley v. Chicago Park District, Cariou v. Prince, and Steinkamp v. Rhona Hoffman (concerning a lost Sol LeWitt certificate of authenticity) will be discussed.

This conversation is part of the exhibition, Canceled: Alternative Manifestations and Productive Failures, curated by Lauren van Haaften-Schick and on view now through June 30, 2012 at the Center for Book Arts in New York City.

Lauren van Haaften-Schick is a curator, artist and writer in New York. She is a current Curator in Residence with Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts’ Art & Law Residency. Recent workshops and projects concerning art and economics include “The Gallerist Programme Workshop” at de Appel arts centre (Amsterdam), the e-flux Time/Store and “Market, Alternative” at Trade School (New York). Recent curatorial projects include “Directly in front of you” at Vox Populi (Philadelphia, PA), “Spirit of the Signal” at Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery (New York, NY), “Get on the Block” at Camel Art Space and “Matinee” at St. Cecilia’s Gallery (Brooklyn, NY). She was the founding director of Gallery TK in Northampton, MA from 2004-2006, and AHN|VHS gallery and bookstore in Philadelphia from 2009-2010. She received a BA in Art History and Studio Art from Hampshire College in 2006.
